Science in Clinical Medicine

Real progress in healthcare happens when science and clinical practice move together. It’s not enough to rely on instinct or tradition, modern medicine demands that we stay grounded in evidence and open to innovation. When scientific discovery is actively integrated into daily care, it becomes a tool for real change, not just a reference. This approach fosters a culture of continuous learning and thoughtful decision-making. It challenges us to question routines, adapt to new knowledge, and stay curious. Clinicians who engage in both research and practice are better prepared to lead and evolve alongside medicine itself. In cardiovascular care, this is especially true. Healing requires more than procedures, it calls for multidisciplinary thinking, precision, and a deep connection between education, science, and the patient’s journey. At its best, medicine is where evidence meets empathy, with the shared goal of better outcomes and lasting impact.

The Epistemic Roles of Clinical Expertise

Clinical expertise goes beyond knowledge, it’s the ability to apply science with skill, judgment, and empathy. It includes a deep understanding of disease mechanisms, diagnostic strategies, treatment options, and patient management, developed through experience and continuous learning. Today, clinical expertise is firmly grounded in evidence-based medicine, where up-to-date research, guidelines, and best practices shape decisions. But it also involves knowing how to act when evidence is limited, balancing data with clinical judgment and patient context.

True expertise is dynamic. It evolves with advancements in science and technology, and it thrives in settings that value reflection, adaptability, and collaboration. In the end, it’s not just about what clinicians know, but how they use that knowledge to deliver thoughtful, effective, and compassionate care.

Expertise in Clinical Medicine: a Tale of Three Models

Precision. Presence. Purpose. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how these three words keep coming back to me—in medicine, yes, but also in conversations, decisions, and quiet moments. They’re not rules or a framework. Just a way of seeing things that seems to hold up. Precision isn’t about perfection. It’s about caring enough to pay attention—to details, to data, to what might happen if we get it wrong. It’s the discipline of doing things properly, not just quickly. Presence is the opposite of autopilot. It’s the part where you actually stop, listen, and give your full attention to what’s in front of you—whether it’s a patient, a friend, or a moment that deserves more than a glance. Purpose is the why. The reason you keep going even when it’s hard or boring or both. It’s the quiet reminder that what you’re doing should matter—to someone, somehow. I don’t always get all three right. But when I do, things feel more grounded. More human. Maybe that’s the point.

Serving on the ESC Congress Programme Committee

“The European Society of Cardiology has earned global recognition for its scientific and educational innovation in cardiovascular medicine. It is the ambition of the Polish Cardiac Society (PTK) to play a greater role in building the strength of ESC by combining professional excellence with scientific engagement.”
The ESC is dedicated to advancing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and to deepening scientific understanding in this field. It is an independent professional society comprising 57 national cardiac societies, representing over 100,000 members, including cardiologists, cardiovascular nurses, and allied professionals. This year’s ESC Congress in Madrid marks a new chapter in cardiovascular science, bringing together global experts to address the challenges and breakthroughs shaping our field today. From cutting-edge trials to multidisciplinary exchange, ESC 2025 is where science becomes practice and where Europe’s cardiovascular community leads the way forward.

Research & Clinical Expertise

Clinical research should go hand in hand. Great medicine happens when research and real-life care inform each other. Every patient interaction can raise meaningful questions, and every study should aim to improve what happens at the bedside. Journals like the Cardiology Journal, an internationally respected publication, play a key role in keeping that connection alive. The best research is not only evidence-based, but also precision-driven and clinically relevant. It doesn’t just follow the data, it asks the right questions, challenges assumptions, and helps tailor care to individual patients. The goal? To keep science and practice in constant dialogue, so both keep moving forward, together.

Focus

Innovation and technology. Priority is given to high-quality studies on novel devices, first-in-man trials, bioengineering, interventional cardiology and translational science that bridge clinical practice and emerging solutions.

The Patient is the Most Important Member of the Team

The patient comes first, always. Medicine isn’t just about procedures or numbers, it’s about people. Every patient brings a story, and listening to it often teaches more than any textbook. The best care happens when decisions are shared, trust is built, and compassion is part of the treatment plan. In the end, it’s not about being the expert, it’s about being a partner in someone’s journey

Students For Students

I'm proud to supervise the Student Scientific Society (STN) at the Medical University of Gdańsk—a student-led organisation with over 50 years of tradition in supporting young researchers. STN connects students involved in scientific circles, helps fund research projects, and fosters a strong community of curiosity and innovation. A highlight of each year is the International Student Scientific Conference (ISSC)—a three-day event featuring research presentations, expert talks, and hands-on workshops. The upcoming 30th edition (April 10–12, 2025) will celebrate 30 years of transformative science under the theme Celebrating CURE-iosities.

Motivation

STN runs workshops, fairs, and student sessions that help make science more accessible and collaborative. Their work has earned them the prestigious Red Rose Prize multiple times.

    Research In Motion

Titles don’t define impact, movement does. I believe in driving research forward, not for its own sake, but to serve people and improve care. True leadership means empowering others, building trust, and shaping systems where science, medicine, and purpose go hand-in-hand. That’s where real change begins.
